Paul’s Eagle Project Restores Stations

What did you do?

I earned my Eagle Scout Award. For my Eagle Project, I organized a project to fix the outdoor Stations of the Cross at the St. Anthony Retreat Center.

The center was once an orphanage for children whose parents were sent to the leper colony on Molokai and was run by the Sacred Heart Sisters.

When the orphanage closed in 1962 and the property was made into a retreat center, the outdoor stations were set up in a hurry, and no plan was made for their long-term care. They were in terrible decay.

What organization recognized the achievement?

The Sacred Heart Sisters, the St. Anthony Retreat Center, and all the hundreds of Catholics who use the center for their retreats and workshops.

How did homeschooling help you achieve your goal?

I had many tasks to organize, and having the freedom to do them for many hours a day and at different times of the day was a luxury I would not have had if I had been in school.

I had to meet with the mosaic artists at her home during the day (because she was blind and didn’t want to have people over at night), and I had to meet with the sisters during the day as well.

What are your interests?

I love music, singing, literature, writing, and theater. I also love debate.

What are you inspired to do with your life?

I am not sure yet. I know God has already given me lots of opportunities and adventures that I had not thought of before. I am sure there are more. I am currently looking into accounting and maybe a math degree, because I also really like Math and I am good at it, but we’ll see. God isn’t finished with me yet 🙂

What are your favorite subjects and why?

Math–see above 🙂

The photo was taken at St. Anthony Retreat Center, Kalihi, Oahu, Hawaii. The Sacred Hearts Sisters organized a blessing of the project by Bishop Larry Silva, who is in the center. Noah Kaniaupio is to the left (He painted the larger-than-life-size crucifix at the end of the Stations). I am to the right in the Boy Scout uniform, behind Bishop Larry Silva. Bishop Larry blessed each station individually.
