First Grader Hugo Wins in 6th Grade Division

I won first place, as a 1st grader, in the 6th-grade division at the Scholastic Sunday chess tournament in Indianapolis.

The achievement was recognized by the Naptown Gambit Chess Club.

Homeschooling has given me the flexibility to follow my passions – including extra time to play and study chess. It has provided me with a safe environment to learn school subjects AND to follow the other gifts God has given me. It also allows me to travel to big tournaments and do work on the go and on my own schedule.

I love chess and playing soccer competitively. I also love praying the rosary with my dad.

What are you inspired to do with your life?

I don’t know yet what I’m inspired to do with my life but as of now I am just learning and going where the Holy Spirit takes me. Hopefully, I can do something with chess or soccer, but who knows what I will fall in love with next?

In the short term, I hope to win the K-1 national championship this May in Columbus, Ohio. At my first national tournament, I tied for 6th.

My favorite subject is math. I also love studying religion.

The photo was taken at the tournament at St. Thomas Aquinas Parish and School in Indianapolis, Indiana.
